In this movie Vanessa is not only showing us her best acting performance than her previous motion pictures, no this movie proves us that a good story and script have to be the solid ground for a GREAT movie and thats what Soul Food is.
I love this movie and Vanessaīs acting (this she really has ALOT screentime and dialog), it is so great and Vanessa plays it right from her heart. This is NOT only to every Vanessa fan, no I say this to everybody - GO OUT AND SEE "SOUL FOOD".

Whatīs special about this one:
Vanessa said in several interviews that has she put alot in her character "Teri", because of her similar experience with Ramon Hervey.

This is Vanessaīs first LEADING film, her name appears first on the cast listing in the movie.

This movie was really favorable, I think it cost under 10 million dollars and made alot money on the Box Office, it opened with more than $11 million and reach after "2" weeks the $20 million mark. Altogether it made more than 50 million dollars, sorry but I donīt now the exact number.

Story:

Forty years of tradition, including a huge dinner every Sunday, have made the Joseph family strong. The center of that strength is Big Mama Joe (I. Hall) who serves up equal portions of love, wisdom, discipline, and of course her irresistible cooking.

Not that the Joseph family doesn't have its problems. Teri (Vanessa Williams), a successful lawyer, could be putting more time into her marriage to Miles (M. Beach), who has dreams that go beyond his own law career. Teri and her sister, Maxine (V. Fox), have been squabbling since Maxine stole (and later married) Teri's boyfriend, Kenny (J. Sams). The youngest Joseph sister, Bird (N. Long), has just married Lem (Mekhi Phifer), but as an excon he has trouble holding a job. And Bird's ex-boyfriend (M. Jackson) is circling, waiting for his chance to re-enter her life. Then there's cousin Faith (G. Ravera), an exotic dancer still finding her way, who drifts in and out of the family. And always causes trouble when she reappears.

Big Mamajoe will do anything to hold her brood together. But when she falls ill, her young grandson Ahmad (B. Hammond) watches helplessly as "just about every grown-up in the family manages to go crazy. Big Mama says, "You do what you have to do to stay strong to save the family." But with everything falling apart, Ahmad wonders if forty years of tradition and "a heapin' amount of soul food" can pull the family back together again.
